YOU’RE A SUPERHERO

Grumpy would be the perfect word to describe my 4 year old today. You would think with the elves in town, keeping watch for Santa that we’d be on our best behavior but that hasn’t been the case so much this season. This afternoon, she was in a mood because she didn’t have a talent. I explained to her that she has lots of talents but she wasn’t interested in listening to what I had to say.
When I was a child, I was often told, “jack of all trades, master of none.” I suppose I never had the attention span to continue to practice just one subject. I loved exploring new things. I tried piano, dance, flute, singing, guitar, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, yearbook, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, the list goes on and on. I admired others who really excelled at music but that wasn’t me. I still have a collection of instruments, hoping that one day I’ll find time to practice but with a toddler in our home, that day won’t be anytime soon;)
If I think back to when I was young, I too probably felt disappointed that I wasn’t great at any one thing. In fact I remember taking piano lessons with my brother and our teacher told me I’d never be able to play a certain song because it was too hard for me. To this day, it’s one of the only songs I can still play from memory;)
I despised having to play the boring pieces she always assigned me and was thankful when I broke my finger outside of her home playing basketball with her kids, while my brother was in having his lesson. It allowed me to wear a splint for our recital and seem like it must be my broken finger, rather than my lack of practice, that accounted for the terrible sound people were polite enough to sit through.
Regardless of my assessment of my talents, the truth is that, “we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” – Ephesians 2:10. It doesn’t matter if we’re not great at any one thing. God created us to be His Masterpiece. He uses the talent we have to make something beautiful. Even my poor guitar playing puts smiles on the faces of my children – and I’ve never seen something more beautiful!
When my daughter is ready to listen, I want to say, “You don't even know all the amazing things you can do yet! Just like a superhero, there’s no limit to what you can do! ‘This is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His Glory.’ (Colossians 1:27) And when you’re grumpy or feeling sad that you’re not who you envisioned yourself to be, know that ‘My Grace is all you need. My Power works best in weakness.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9).
So, as we celebrate Christmas and the birth of our Savior, it was fitting that my children would be sporting their superhero capes, reminding me of the power within us to accomplish any lofty goal with the talents we’re given.
What talent should you be using?
